WWDC2014: Apple announces iOS 8, OS X Yosemite

NEW DELHI: Apple has announced the new iOS 8 for iPads and iPhones and OS X Yosemite, the next version of its desktop operating system, with a slew of new features.The announcements were made at the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), the ongoing annual developers conference of Apple.OS X Yosemite comes with a new, overhauled user interface, new apps and new continuity features that make working across Mac and iOS devices more fluid.It offers a new Today view in Notification Center that gives a quick look at everything users need to know, in one place; iCloud Drive which is located within the Finder and can store files of any type; and Safari which has a new streamlined design that puts the most important controls at the front.It also has a new Mail apps that improves editing and attachment capabilities; Handoff that lets users start an activity on one device and pass it to the other; and Instant Hotspot that makes using the iPhone's hotspot as easy as connecting to a Wi-Fi network. Yosemite also offers users the ability to make iPhone calls on your Mac."Yosemite is the future of OS X with its incredible new design and amazing new apps, all engineered to work beautifully with iOS," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering."We engineer our platforms, services and devices together, so we are able to create a seamless experience for our users across all our products that is unparalleled in the industry. It's something only Apple can deliver."With Yosemite, OS X has been redesigned with a fresh modern look where controls are clearer, smarter and easier to understand, and streamlined toolbars that put the focus on content.It features translucent elements that reveal additional content in app windows, provide a hint at what's hidden behind and take on the look of your desktop. App icons now have a clean, consistent design and an updated system font improves readability, as per Apple.Apple also showcased iOS 8, the next iteration of its mobile operating system. The OS brings new end user and developer features. The OS offers actionable notifications, iCloud Drive, improved Safari and Mail apps and overhauled Spotlight search feature. It also now comes with a Family Sharing feature that lets up to six family members share photos, calendars, reminders, and other content with each other. The iOS 8 keyboard now also offers predictive typing with a feature called QuickType. The OS also features HealthKit which will collect health related data from different sources and apps, including the likes of Fitbit. Siri, the voice assistant has also received an update and now allows users to launch it hands-free with the 'Hey, Siri' command. It will also offer Shazam voice recognition, 22 new dictation languages,and streaming voice recognition to offer users search results as they speak.
